The 2025 Eastern Football Netball League fixture has been released and it’s a solid fixture for the DEFC 🦁 as we look to return to finals and re-establish ourselves in Premier Division.

With home games bookending the season against Berwick in Rd 1 on 12th April and Blackburn in Rd 18 on 13rd August, we have plenty of big games to look forward to.

A HUGE Anzac Day clash away against Vermont 🦅 headlines Rd 2, followed by a home game against Sth Croydon 🐶 who we led for 3 quarters in our final game last season.

Round 4 gives us a chance to atone for our big loss against Roos 🦘 in 2024 at their home ground in East Ringwood.

Rounds 5 and 6 are both at home against the Premiers - first against last years Div 1 Premiers, Mitcham 🐯 who will be keen to show they’re up to to the standard as they return to Premier division for the first time in 18 years. Second home game is against reigning Premiers Balwyn 🐯, so it’s the Lions v the Tigers 2 weeks in a row!

On 31st May, Rd 7, we’re away at Rowville . Another game the boys will be keen to atone for. We then have a week off for the King 👑 but are back on the 14th June to host the Bulls 🐂 , Noble Park at home for Rd 8.

Round 9 sees us in our first back-to-back away games, against Blackburn at Morton Park, followed by Berwick in Rd 10 at Edwin Flack Reserve on June 28th.

Huge game back at home in Rd 11 against Vermont 🦅 on 5th July, followed by an away game against the Bulldogs 🐶 at Cheong park in Rd 12 on the 12th.

Block out your calendars!! Rd 13, July 20, we’re back at home against East Ringwood 🦘in a huge SUNDAY game. Will be a massive day for the club as the stand alone game for the EFNL that day!!

July 26, Rd 14, we return to Walker Park in Mitcham for the first time since winning the 2007 GF, so great memories!! Rd 15, Aug 2nd, also sees us away, in our return bout with Balwyn 🐯.

Our run home, we have a home game against the Rowville Hawks in Rd 16 on the 9th, an away game against Noble Park in Rd 17 on the 16th Aug and finish off against the Burners at home before hopefully embarking on a finals campaign!!

It is with great pleasure the DEFC Commitee wish to introduce our new Head Coach Ryan James.

Ryan brings a wealth of contempory coaching experience with him after a career that has seen him working with Port Melbourne FC, Oakleigh Chargers FC and Mulgrave FC.

After a very extensive selection process we would like to thank all of the applicants who tendered the position. We were humbled by the calibre of AFL/VFL experience that applied and presented.

The coaching appointment sub committee were unanimous that Ryan was the candidate who's presentation exceeded all of our prerequisites in regards to club culture, match day tactics and community values.

Ryan is very enthustastic to get to work and lead our club on it's future journey.

We will provide further updates and details as Ryan settles into his surroundings.

Welcome to the Lions Pride Ryan, Eliza and Kelsey.

Go Lions

Letter From DEFC President - Steve Buckle Senior Coach

A notice from our president about senior coach Steve Buckle

To all our sponsors, members, supporters & players,

The committee made the decision to part ways with Seve Buckle after his eight seasons leading our club. This was a very difficult decision and even more so for myself on a personal level as I consider Bucks a respected, close friend who I have shared many great memories.

The decision was not taken lightly, however after eight years at one clun ad after a thorough review proccess we unanimously felt the players needed a fresh voice.

Steve's tenure has seen appearances in five finals, four Grand Finals, back to back premierships & coaching our ainden year in Premier Division which we contested vigorously. Bucks is passing the baton as DEFC's longest serving and most decorated coach.

To Buck's credit from his first interview through to our announcement meeting last night has has consistently shown class, passion and a genuine care for the players, staff and committee.

I wouldlike to thank Tara, Mckenzie, Hudson and Willow for supporting Steve whilst he spent probably too many hours at the club over the years. It goes without saying the DEFC doors will always be open to the Buckle family.

On behalf of the committee and greater DEFC family, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the joy that you have brought to DEFC. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, as we are temporary servants of this great club, but forever part of it's family.

I look forward to a send off BBQ when restrictions allow and whatever the near future holds for Bucks, whether it's coaching another side or robust banter on the Zerbes Hill as a DEFC Supporter!

It was a bitter pill to swallow last Saturday, looking like we had the game under control in the last quarter, but absolute credit to North Ringwood who never game up & ended up winning by 3 points.

The reserve/development team had a great win & are now 2-1. Really proud of Brem and all the players for turning not only form on, but getting 20 plus to training & Brem having to pick a side is really encouraging.

Vas & 19s 4 out of 5 have been decided by less than a kick & unfortunately we have been on the wrong end of the results, the luck will change in our favour very soon, keep up the training standards & great enthusiasm around the club boys & it will turn very quickly.

Ladies lunch Saturday June 5th let’s get the rooms packed!

Sunday June 13 our biggest event...Monster raffle!!! Dave Sowersby will be selling tickets very soon.

We are also excited to be having our Cocktail party at Bambi which is Nick and Dan Russians bar that is opening in the coming weeks, save Saturday July 31, we are extremely lucky to be having this event at one of Melbourne’s most talked about bars.

Finally I want to congratulate Jake 'Dolph' Whitling on his 100th DEFC game this weekend, Dolph is a great club-man. We love having him and his family part of our community - He is a 2 x Premiership player with the far wing at Tormore Reserve named after him.

Let’s get 3 wins Saturday!!!

Go Lions!!!

After 50 long years we have a win in Premier Division!!

From my end this is our biggest win in clubs history, the club has been working tirelessly for so many years to play in premier Division & we all know the challenges we have had over the past 3 years & to finally see it happen, makes me very happy, but also shows us on and off field the club is up to playing Premier Division footy & let’s hope for many years to come.

A huge thanks to Ryan Gordan and Leo who did a mountain of work Saturday & to Bruce Ward for looking after the past players & supporters on the hill. Also, like to thank the EFNL media team for making the day very special & who put on a fantastic show.

U19s narrowly lost, but boys are really improving & really all buying into the club.

Development/Reserves very proud of all who played on Saturday & to have a really strong win is fantastic for a our club. Seniors proud is understatement, but for all the guys who worked their ass’s off not only in pre-season but for the past 4/5 years I’m extremely happy for you all.

A shout out to Pete Green our Performance Coach who we employed to get the guys nice & fit. Let’s hope this holds us in good stead going forward.

To Doncaster we can’t wait to play you queens birthday weekend at your home ground. We have a fantastic rivalry & to Sean and the club we wish all the best, this is why we love local footy.

Let hope this week was 1 of many more wins for us in Premier Division which I’m sure it will be with our coaches, players, supporters, sponsors and committee, the clubs in really good shape.

We've locked in our date for the Lady's luncheon - June 5th - we hope all the partners, mothers, sisters and friends can make it to what is always a great day at the club!

Go Lions!!!

Message from the President - June 2020

To all our loyal supporters, sponsors, playing group and coaching department.

Firstly, I would like to extend my personal gratitude and appreciation to each and everyone of you for your unwavering support over the last few months.

As a committee we have worked tirelessly around the clock, side by side with out coaches and the EFNL to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic and still deliver a Premier division season. As a Club we were disappointed with the outcome to abandon the 2020 season but we accept the decision handed down by the EFNL.

As a Club we are still investigating other avenues to potentially play some football in 2020, however our immediate focus has not shifted to our ultimate commitment to prepare our teams to contend for silverware in our maiden season in EFNL Premier Division in 2021 and beyond.

Our football club has earned our rightful position in Premier Division and will be making a fully tilt at strenthening our great club on and off field for 2021.

Our short term focus will be directed our our U19 Development squad. Fortiuitously the YJFL and Beverley Hills JFC are in early discussions to hopefully manufacture a scenario that will see the U19 players be eligible to take the field in a 2020 season similar to the old U18 competition. We see this as a great advantage to invest in our future stars and the development and transition of the current crop of talented Beverley Hills JFC Colts players.

I am extremely proud of the solid foundation Doncaster East Football Club has built and I can't wait to see our boys run out in our club colours whenever that will be.

Also, I implore all of you, if anyone would like to call and chat to me for whatever reason please feel free, we are an open book for any suggestions or concerns.

Go Lions!

Hi all,

The last few days has seen increasing uncertainty and a turn of events unlike anything we’ve seen. We are being guided by the league and ultimately the AFL as a governing body.

As it stands the season will start in late May, with the start date To be reviewed on May 2.

In regard to training the leaders will be in touch on a plan going forward although, we are lead a little bit by EFNL and ultimately the gov health organisations.

Our main priority at this time the health of our players, coaches, support staff and supporters.

The club understands this is a difficult period as we were all looking forward to the opportunity that is in front of us in 2020 and we still aim to have an impact on the competition in what ever form it takes over the next few months.

All we ask is while there is a bit of uncertainty , players take care of themselves and families and it is important to stay active & stay in touch with one and other.

We as a club need to stay fluid and ready for whatever changes that occur over the next few months and be prepared once we get the opportunity to start our life in premier division.

Stay hungry, stay connected and if anyone has any issues or questions the club is here to support you.

Cheer
Pete sowersby

At DEFC we are fortunate to have the support of many good people, some go above and beyond, none more so than David Sowersby owner Walshe & Whitelock Real Estate.

David gave ten years of service to the Committee and continues to volunteer his time and talents organising major fundraisers, recruiting and one line retorts.

David has also been a major sponsor of our club for the past 18 years, where he has enjoyed watching both his sons, Michael and Peter play their football.

David is a valued life member at Doncaster East FC, he is also a life member of Beverley Hills Junior FC, Glen Waverley FC and Glen Waverley CC, where he still pulls on the whites and likes to have a bat.

Away from DEFC David likes to raise funds for Lady of the Pines and St Anne’s Primary School are at the early stages of his generosity.

Walshe & Whitelock also sponsor Beverley Hills JFC, East Doncaster CC, Glen Waverley CC, St David’s CC, Coburg CC, West Coburg FC and Ascot Vale Veterans FC.

David is a regular face at training and on game days, for all your humorous needs have beer with David and let him know you appreciate his support. For all your Real estate needs have a chat with Walshe & Whitelock on (03) 9384 1400 or pop in for a coffee at 701 Sydney Rd Brunswick 3056.

Support those that support you.

The DEFC family thank you Dave.

In what has already been a difficult and sad day for the DEFC family we have learnt this afternoon of the passing of one of our favorite daughters Anne Stevenson. Many will have met Anne when buying a drink over the bar and will have had the pleasure of Anne’s dry sense of humour and at times motherly instincts in bringing our players in to line (in a manner only Anne could get away with).

Whilst Anne has fought hard over the last few years to overcome her illness, she continued to be part of our Club and gave of her time when maybe she should have be looking after herself. But Anne just loved being around the Club and said it was the best medicine she could get.

Our deepest condolences go out to Anne’s partner Simon Roos, Anne’s children Matt and Sarah, and the Stevenson and Roos families

Image: Anne loved the DEFC bar, but none more than this night when Shannon Noll tried to take over.
